In terms of
email marketing this is a process of checking email address to see if it is
dead or we can keep it in mass email list. When I say dead I mean that messages
we send to a dead address bounces back with messages like this:
Delivery to
the following recipient failed permanently:
whoever@example.net
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it
was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email
provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that
the other server returned was: 550 550 Unknown user (state 14).
In this particular
case this dead email wasn't ever born (550 550 Unknown user (state 14). This
called hard bounce. Alright, lets make it simple. There are two types of
bounces.
- Hard bounce. It happens when during
email check server says “User unknown” or gives you a similar message. This is
a permanent problem. Email is invalid. Email is dead or never existed.
- Soft bounce. Server says “mailbox is
full” or all kind of a temporary problems. You got a chance to email it later
when it is back to normal. Decide whether to keep it or move into a list to check
again later.
Now, how to
validate or check email addresses to see if they will bounce back?
You need email verifier software or online verification service. Software is good when you
want to go unlimited and not to bother about monthly payment. Online verifiers
normally have monthly subscriptions with recurring payment. Sometimes online is
faster and more accurate. It always needs testing. Never get verifier from
companies who do not offer free trials. Always call support prior to purchase
to ask how their service checks validity of email addresses. Ensure they know
how. Presales support must be of the same quality as tech support you get after
you purchase.
Remember, when you send mass mail the bounces you get the higher chances of getting blacklisted by SMTP server provider or mail service like mailchimp, iContact etc.
